Dave Andrews has been tattooing for 15 years and has always been held in high regard in the Victorian tattoo scene. He started out by getting his hands on some equipment and tattooing himself and some mates who were willing to be his guinea pigs. This really was the only way to get a start in tattooing way back, because the industry was very tight lipped and near on impossible to break into. (It’s a bit different these days). To this day he remains on his own, starting out self taught, and having never worked with anyone or employed anyone (he still feels he is unqualified to teach anyone). He’s always learning more and I doubt that he’d have the time to show someone the ropes with his work load. I asked Dave what he thought he gained or how he has been disadvantaged by toughing it out on his own, “the disadvantages are you have to teach yourself as there is no one to learn from. The only way to do this is by getting tattooed yourself and watching how they do it and picking up some technical tips along the way that keep you headed in the right direction. The advantages are that you have your own unique and unadulterated style, not just a copy of the person you learned from” Dave has run the Inkspot Tattoo Studio for the last 8 years…
